The following three actions have the flag as a starting point. It functions not only as a symbol of nation-identity but as a symbol of power in a geopolitical symbolic context. The American flag has been an iconographic representation in the conscience of people worldwide, of an asymmetrical political relationship between the USA and other nations. For “Flag Day 2008” The Floating Lab Collective designed new flags. Actions 2 and 3, are flags where the thirteen original states surround the geographic representation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The two new flag designs question the role of the USA in those Middle Eastern countries, and the sense of sovereignty and identity in this new geopolitical context. Action 4, is an action by Christian Nerf, a South African artist who designed an American Flag of one hundred and one stars. The additional stars on the flag represent countries or territories where the USA has intervened, bombarded, occupied, or colonized. |
